In a new development coming straight out of the Ford headquarters, the company is looking at new safety restraints for pregnant drivers, which aim at protecting the fetus, which are at significant risk with the current system. The technology is still experimental, though Ford is looking at many different options to protect unborn fetuses in motor vehicle accidents.

The problem is that many states are not required to report fetal deaths in automobile accidents, and Ford is looking to rectify this. According to reports the biggest danger in any crash involving a fetus is placental abruption.

At the moment Ford’s plans are simply to use computer models to develop pregnancy-friendly safety devices, though the industry could be upwards of fifteen years away from new technologies to help protect fetuses. However, both Virginia Tech and Wake Forest Universities are looking at models which could help protect pregnant drivers.

This is a great progressive move from Ford and other automobile companies are beginning to look into the technology as well. It’s a great move from the automotive industry and a great step in showing consumers that the automotive industry really does care about them. Let’s hope that this technology actually goes somewhere. Though this has no direct effect on the auto transport industry, it could have drastic effects on the auto industry in general, which does include auto transport companies.
