A History of Baltimore

The Port of Baltimore was founded in 1706 as an easy way to transport tobacco from Virginia and Maryland overseas; as such, the town of Baltimore was founded in 1729, though a small settlement had been erected in the area prior to its founding. Baltimore was a key city leading up to the American Revolution, as city leaders moved to the city to help protest the unfair British taxes. After the Revolution Baltimore blossomed as a major port city and transportation and manufacturing hub during the 19th century and beyond.

Transportation in Baltimore

Baltimore has always played a major role in shipping and transportation – it was founded as a port to haul tobacco across the Atlantic Ocean. As railroads began to be commonplace, Baltimore found itself at the center of a number of rail lines that helped the city grow by leaps and bounds, eventually securing it as one of the primary transportation centers on the Eastern Seaboard. Today the city’s economy has diversified, but the transportation industry is still going strong, with high-tech goods being some of Baltimore’s main exports.
