The History of Birmingham
Birmingham was first founded in 1871, not long after the American Civil War had drawn to a close, as a small industrial enterprise. It was named after Britain’s industrial powerhouse of the same name and throughout the late 19th and up until the middle of the 20th century it was the main industrial center in the southern United States. Birmingham grew at an astonishing rate, mainly because of people in the south looking for work, though by the 1980’s the economy of the city had diversified into such fields as banking, insurance, medicine and biotechnology; manufacturing, however, still maintains a strong presence in the city.
Transportation in Birmingham
Because of its status as a major industrial powerhouse in the southern United States the few railroads that existed at the time were extended through the city, and several more were built to accommodate the city’s growing manufacturing needs. Many goods were brought to the city, and just as much was exported across the United States, particularly iron and steel. Today the city’s transportation has extended into the public sector, with several major freeways and interstate highways going through the city, though the railroads still move freight to and from the city on a daily basis.
