History of Columbus
The first permanent American settlement was founded in 1797 by Lucas Sullivant, a smalltime explorer who had previously encountered several native tribes in the area. A large flood wiped out the original settlement, however, in 1798, though it was rebuilt. When Ohio achieved statehood in 1803 there was much ado about where the state capital would end up residing, though Columbus was eventually chosen. It was quickly connected to Baltimore via the National Road. It was chartered as a city in 1834, and by the turn of the 20th century manufacturing and transportation had become staples of the city.
Transportation and its Rise in Columbus
The manufacturing and transportation industries have always had a strong bond, with manufactured goods always needing a way to get from their origin to their destination. Columbus, for a long time, utilized the Ohio and Erie canals to ship its goods, and more recently railroads and long-haul trucking. In 1850 the Columbus and Xenia Railroad was the first railroad to enter the city, with more coming in the following years. A Union Station was built and by 1875 Columbus had eight full railroads crossing through the city.
