A History of Corpus Christi
The city of Corpus Christi was first founded in 1839 by a man named Colonel Henry Lawrence Kinney; it was first known as Kinney’s Trading Post and even Kinney’s Ranch; either way the area was a small trading post designed to sell supplies to a Mexican revolutionary army which was camped about 25 miles west of the area. US troops under General Zachary Taylor actually camped at the fort in preparation for the Mexican American War, but didn’t leave until March 1946; by then the area was a small city and it was renamed Corpus Christi in 1852.
Transportation of Corpus Christi
Corpus Christi is the home of the Corpus Christi Naval Air Station, which was commissioned in 1941 and before it was commissioned several major railroads were built through the city. After the air station was built, however, the transportation industry in the city grew slowly but sure. The city was never fully dependent on the transportation industry the way other cities in the area were, though having railroads going through the city didn’t hurt its development. Today the transportation industry of the city is mostly comprised of mass transit – namely buses.
