A Brief History of Dallas

Dallas was founded in 1841, and was officially incorporated as a city in 1856. It grew quickly into a major cultural and economic hub in northern Texas; it actually began life as a part of the Viceroyalty of New Spain. It broke apart from Mexico in 1836, though at that time it was merely a small settlement filled with cattle and not much else. John Neely Bryan officially established a permanent settlement in the area and two years later became Dallas. The railroad came to the town not long after its establishment, and grew incredibly quick for such a small settlement, especially considering the fact that it is away from any major body of water. Today the city is known for its banking, commerce, transportation, telecommunications, computer technology and energy, as well as oil.

Transportation and the Rise of the Dallas Transportation Industry

Because of its location in the middle of northern Texas, Dallas is devoid of any major water shipping industries; as such, its transportation industry grew on the back of the railroads. During the 20th century, the national highway system overtook the city and long-haul trucking became a staple of the city, making it one of the major transportation hubs in all of Texas, and indeed most of the Deep South. Its main exports are oil and cotton, two commodities that it has in excess, and the transportation industry in Dallas is far from going under.

Tourism in Dallas

Dallas is well-known for its barbeque, authentic Mexican cuisine, and the newer Tex-Mex style of cooking, though aside from the great food most tourists tend to visit the expansive arts district in the northern section of downtown Dallas. Its many art museums include the Dallas Museum of Art, the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center and the Trammell and Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art, among many other equally notable museums and music centers. Dallas is perhaps most famous for, outside of Austin, its wide country music scene, with many concert halls introducing tourists and residents alike to new, up-and-coming artists.
