A Brief History of Durham

Durham was first founded in 1853 when searches for a suitable railroad depot for the North Carolina Railroad, running between Raleigh and Hillsborough, were first getting underway. At the time the area was known as Herndon and it even had its own post office, though the area was renamed Durham in 1853 after the railroad came through the city. The area that is now known as Durham was mostly rural and agricultural and grew slowly before the outbreak of the American Civil War, though after the war manufacturing came to the town and the city grew rapidly.
