A Brief History of Fort Wayne
Fort Wayne was first constructed in 1794 under the direction of General Anthony Wayne – it was actually built last in a series of forts constructed on what was then the frontier. It was built on the banks of the confluence of the St. Joseph, St. Mary’s, and Maumee Rivers and was a major trading post. In 1823, after the construction of the Wabash and Erie Canal, the area exploded and Fort Wayne as a city began to prosper. Railroads came not long after, and today the economy of the city is based on manufacturing, education, insurance, logistics, defense, security and health care.
Transportation in Fort Wayne
Fort Wayne began as a trading post and expanded with the construction of the Wabash and Erie Canal; after the city had expanded, several major rail lines were built through the city, allowing manufacturing to take hold and the city began to prosper. As the 20th century dawned Fort Wayne saw unprecedented growth in the transportation sector, thanks mainly to its huge manufacturing base, though by the turn of the 21st century the city’s economy had diversified with transportation taking a backseat. Today the city’s transportation includes mass transit, bike paths, air traffic and the occasional railroad traffic, though automobiles still take up the majority of the city’s transportation sector.
