A Brief History of Honolulu

Honolulu was first founded by Europeans in late 1795 as a stopping point for merchant ships traveling between North America and Asia, though in 1845 the capital came to Honolulu. It was the site of major fighting in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, though after its annexation by the United States it became one of the top tourist and vacation destinations in the United States. After its annexation, the tourist boom of the 1960’s (which has yet to really slow) brought the city to where it is today, and as of 2007 more than 7.6 million visitors per year travel to the city alone.

Transportation in Honolulu

Honolulu grew on the back of the transportation industry. It began life as a small stopping point for merchant ships sailing between North America and Asia, and modern air travel brought the city to the American limelight as a prime tourist and vacation destination. Few railroads go through the city, as it is on an island, but what it lacks in rail shipping it makes up for in the massive amounts of sea transportation going on every day. Because of its location on an island, most of its goods are shipped in from overseas, making the transportation industry one of the largest in the region.

Tourism in Honolulu

Aside from shipping, Honolulu makes most of its money through tourism. It is home to many performing arts centers, including the Honolulu Symphony and the Neal Blaisdell Center Concert Hall, as well as the Waikiki Shell and the Hawaii Theatre. Aside from those, however, tourists find themselves walking along its many sandy beaches and enjoying authentic Hawaiian food and its many luaus, which are held in a myriad of places each and every night. Tourism is by far the city’s largest income generator, and as such the city does what it can to accommodate its many visitors – it has over 7.6 million visitors each year.
