A Brief History of Memphis

Memphis was founded in 1819 by three men: John Overton, James Winchester and Andrew Jackson – the same Andrew Jackson that would eventually become the president of the United States. It was named after the ancient Egyptian capital of the same name, and became one of the leading cotton suppliers before the Civil War. It was a major stop on the Memphis and Charleston Railroad, the only major railroad running through the southern states prior to the American Civil War. Today the city is a major transportation hub throughout most of the south.

Memphis has been a major transportation and manufacturing hub since before the American Civil War, and was the largest city along the Memphis and Charleston Railroad. It provided much of the cotton that fueled the southern states prior to the war, and even after the war continued to provide cash crops throughout the United States. Memphis grew as the national highway system was completed in the 1950’s and its manufacturing sector grew as the transportation industry continued to flourish.

Memphis is a major contributor to many different musical genres, including Blues, Gospel, Rock and Roll, Buck, Crunk, and the old-school country music (which is vastly different than the Nashville type of country music). Many music festivals are held in the city each year, and if music isn’t your thing you can always visit some of the many art museums that dot the city.
