New York City – A History
New York City originated as a Dutch colony and was first founded in 1614, and contrary to popular belief, it was purchased for the small price of 60 guilders, which is equivalent to about $1,000 today. Under British rule the city expanded into a major trading port and after the American Revolution was named the capital of the newly found United States. It was the site of major draft riots in 1863, and today is the largest city in the United States with a population of over 8 million.
It is made up of five unique sections – Manhattan, Queens, the Bronx, Staten Island and Brooklyn, each with its own unique history and culture that helps make New York City one of the top destinations for auto transport in the United States.
Transportation in New York City
New York has had a major impact on the transportation sector, considering its status as a world city. Since its humble beginnings transportation has been a major part of the city’s economy, whether it was transporting goods via rail or through major waterways. Today, however, the city is one of the top auto transport destinations in the United States. Most people in Manhattan tend to walk, as the streets are relatively cramped and hard to get around on, though in other boroughs cars are quite common. Manhattan is easily the most common auto transport destination, but arguably the hardest part of the city to get around in.
Tourist Destinations in New York City
New York City is full of tourist traps and places to see – it is a world city, after all. Most tourists tend to stick with the United Nations or the Statue of Liberty, though there are literally hundreds of places that you can visit.
