A Brief History of Orlando
Orlando was first established in 1838 as a small outpost during the Second Seminole War and the area grew slowly until 1856, when it was named the new county seat of Orange County. Orlando was the hub of Florida’s citrus industry until about 1895, when control of independent groves shifted to what were known as citrus barons. During the Second World War the city became a major army base and air field, later becoming an air force base. The city continued to grow after the Orlando International Airport was constructed in 1962.

Orlando is serviced by the Orlando International Airport, which is the busiest airport in the state of Florida, as well as several major highways including Interstate 4, Toll 408, which is managed by the Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority, the Beachline Expressway, the Central Florida Greenway and Interstate 95. the city is also serviced by a small commuter rail service as well as two different railroad lines.
