A History of Pittsburgh

The history of Pittsburgh begins with the construction of Fort Pitt during the late 18th century, and soon after its construction a small settlement erupted around the area. The village (at the time) continued to grow rapidly after the American Revolution ended and by the mid 19th century Pittsburgh had emerged as one of the top manufacturing cities on the east coast. The city is perhaps best known for its steel industry, which was one of the primary income generators for the city (along with the transportation industry) until the 1970’s; today the city’s economy has diversified into such fields as healthcare, education, technology, robotics and financial services, though the steel industry’s influence on the city cannot be ignored (the local NFL team, the Steelers, is named after the industry).

Transportation in Pittsburgh

As Pittsburgh’s manufacturing sector grew to meet the demands of the United States the transportation industry grew right along with it. The manufacturing base, especially the steel industry, needed to ship its goods across the United States to meet the demand placed upon the city, so new rail lines were built through the city to accommodate. The transportation industry has slowed down with the decline of the city’s manufacturing base, though it has increased in the personal sector, with major funding going to fixing roads and highways in the city, as well as new projects to install pedestrian walking and bicycling paths through the city in an effort to clean up the city.

Tourism in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh is home to several major art and symphony halls including the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Heinz Hall. It is also the home of the Pittsburgh Opera, which performs at the Benedum Center – the center is one of the major venues in the city. It is also the site of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History as well as the Andy Warhol Museum, the Frick Art and Historical Center and the Art Gardens of Pittsburgh.
