A Brief History of Portland, OR

Portland was founded in a sport known as “The Clearing,” and was named after the founder’s hometown of Portland, Maine. It was incorporated in 1851, just eight years after its founding, and by 1879 the city had grown to over 17,000 residents. Because of its location close to the Pacific Ocean and being along the banks of the Columbia and Willamette Rivers, the city’s transportation and shipping industries, as well as the agricultural industry, flourished. During the latter half of the 20th century the city’s manufacturing industry also began to flourish, though today the city is more known for its many service-based jobs and industries, including healthcare and finance.
