A Brief History of San Francisco

The Spanish established a small fort at the Golden Gate in 1776 and actually named it for Francis of Assisi, though it remained a small coastal fort until the California Gold Rush in 1848. The gold rush propelled the city into the largest city on the west coast at the time, which was a growth that wouldn’t stop until the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. In what would become the fastest disaster recovery in recent history, the city was rebuilt and the city became a major transportation hub during the first and second world wars. San Francisco was again a huge destination during the Summer of Love, and became the leader in the gay rights movement during the 1970’s and 80’s.

The Transportation Industry in San Francisco

The rise of the transportation industry in San Francisco began not long after the end of World War II. With many servicemen returning from the war, jobs needed to be created, and after the construction of the national highway system the transportation industry grew by leaps and bounds. With many goods and services needing to be transported across the country, San Francisco rose to the challenge and became one of the forefronts in the transportation industry on the west coast.

Tourism in San Francisco

San Francisco is a popular international tourist destination, and is world renowned for its fog, hills and the interesting mix of both Victorian and modern architecture. Some of the more famous tourist destinations include the Golden Gate Bridge, which spans the entire San Francisco Bay, the many cable cars that have been in operation for almost an entire century. The cable cars were first installed in the early 20th century and have been in constant operation since. But perhaps the most famous spot is San Francisco’s Chinatown, which is perhaps the most authentic representation of China in all of America.
