A History of Toledo

Toledo was founded around what was known as Fort Industry in 1794, though during the War of 1812 many settlers fled the city. Resettling of the city began in early 1817 when a company in Cincinnati purchased the land; the city was actually two separate cities at the time, with Cherry Street being the border. It was slow to expand, though the outbreak of the Civil War saw the city grow almost exponentially, and during the early 20th century the city’s transportation and manufacturing industries brought many new residents to the city. At the time canals were the main mode of transportation, though by 1890 the city had replaced much of the canals with railroads, which helped the burgeoning industrial sector of the city to grow rapidly. Toledo is still a major manufacturer of automobiles, though with the recent downturn of the automobile industry the city’s economy has diversified.

Transportation in Toledo

Toledo’s transportation sector was largely dependent on canals to ship its goods throughout most of the 19th century, though by the turn of the 20th century many of the canals had virtually ceased to operate with the railroads becoming the main mode of transportation. Switching to rail transportation helped the city’s expanding industrial sector to expand at a much more rapid pace, as its wares could reach a much broader consumer base. As the automobile industry, particularly the Willys Jeep assembly plant, expanded in Toledo, the transportation sector grew along with it. Today the economy has diversified and the Willys plant is no more, though transportation is still a part of the city’s economy.
