A Brief History of Tucson

Tucson was first founded in 1700, though it wouldn’t be until 1775 that the Spanish would establish a walled fortress in the area. After the Gadsden Purchase in 1853 the city became a part of the United States, though it wasn’t until three years later that the city would be taken over by the American military and brought formally into the United States. The city grew slowly until the railroad system was built through the city – afterwards, the city grew quickly until the 1940’s, when the population evened out and the transportation sector began to slow.

Until the railroads came to the city in the late 1800’s, the city’s growth was relatively slow. The population stayed fairly consistent since its construction in 1775 by the Spanish, but the transportation sector of the city didn’t grow until the railroads came to town. Afterwards, the manufacturing sector grew quickly, with the ability to transport its goods to a much broader base than previously before. The rise of its transportation industry is much the same as other towns, though today it has given way to a more service-based economy, where transportation isn’t the priority.

Tucson is the home of many museums and art galleries, including the Tucson Museum of Art and the Fort Lowell Museum. Most of the cultural artifacts are collected and stored by the Arizona Historical Society, and one of its many features is the Tucson Gem, Mineral and Fossil Showcase, which is held annually in the city. The University of Arizona also has its own body or work, including works by Franz Kline, Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko, among many others. It also includes many old Spanish ruins, including the Mission San Xavier del Bac, which is an historic Spanish mission located just ten miles south of the city.
