Along with Connecticut Rhode Island (RI), a.k.a. "Little Rhody," never ratified the 18th Amendment which banned alcohol. Although, RI was the first of the 13 colonies to sign the Declaration of Independence and last to sign the Constitution. Geographically, RI is the very smallest state in the United States with just over 1,200 square miles of land. It is called the "Ocean State" because no matter where one is they do not have to drive any more than a half hour to get to the sea. Rhode Island is known not just for is waters but also its history. The founder of Rhode Island, was publicly recognized by Thomas Jefferson and John Adams as the first to establish a practical working model of Democracy after he was banished from Plymouth, Massachusetts as a result of his "extreme views" pertaining to religion and freedom of speech. Consequently, Roger Williams is considered to be the originator of the concepts and principles reflected in The First Amendment. Among those principles were freedom of public assembly, freedom of religion, and freedom of speech. Indeed, American might be a very different place if it weren't for Rhode Island. For such a small state the public bus system is rather extensive so that people without cars and automobiles can work, shop and learn. In fact, the bus lines serve 38 out of the 39 communities in RI with a total of 58 bus lines. Odd laws in RI are: Any marriage where either of the people is an idiot and/or a lunatic is invalid; You cannot sell toothpaste and a toothbrush to the same person on the same day; You can be imprisoned for chewing off someone's leg. |
